In 1983, because of their great appreciation for and background in the field of Chemistry, the founders of Mikroquímica – Produtos Químicos Lda founded a company with the aim of developing specific products for the tanning industry. This company would give exclusive support to a company which they had had for twenty years and which is today our shareholder, Curtumes Ibéria S.A. In addition to these products, other products such as acrylic paints and coating for civil construction were also developed, which is why the company opted to change its name in 2000 to the one it has today.

At the beginning of 2006, Mikroquímica and Josep Puerto entered into an agreement to develop, produce and market chemical products for the cork industry. With 25 years experience in this sector, Mr Puerto is responsible for Development and Technical Support, while Mikroquímica takes care of Production, Marketing Logistics and Distribution.

In October 2008, the Paços de Brandão Laboratory was opened. This infrastructure has enabled the company to pursue a strategy of proximity and partnership creation within the market. The creation of an equally experienced team with a wide knowledge of industry made it possible to establish partnerships aimed at developing new products and application systems more quickly, mainly in the cork stopper industry. Using replicas of industrial equipment for coatings and surface treatments, for example, to produce 150 to 2000 cork stoppers, will enable us to carry out further developments and improvements at laboratory level, thereby saving our customers a lot of time and considerable costs.

A major example of these developments is the use of water-based products to seal cork stoppers. The system developed by Mikroquímica and its partners to carry out this kind of operation allows us to replace dangerous sealants with eco-friendly systems, reducing production costs and times by combining two operations into one.

Because of the increasing volume in sales and the consequent need to improve customer support, Mikroquímica moved to its new premises in Lourosa in September 2013. A larger laboratory allows us to install various application and testing equipment which will support future developments and allow us to respond more quickly to our customers. With these new facilities, we also aim to improve logistical problems by bringing a permanent stock of our main products closer to the market.

Our main objective is to improve on what we have now and create new partnerships with the cork industry, thereby improving our service and increasing our ability to respond to our customer needs and, consequently, to their customers as well.
